Someone has been trying to sell this New York-based smart roadster for about two years now. They keep asking $30k for it and since it’s still for sale, I don’t need to tell you they’re not getting any bites.

To put this into perspective, a perfect condition crossblade (a FAR FAR more rare smart) is worth about $30K-$40k in the US regardless of title.

Kinja'd!!!

Look, the roadsters aren’t worth a whole lot of money and are now completely legal to import into Canada. They’re basically making you pay an extra $20+k for the title and registration.

Kinja'd!!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with reserve not met, maaaaybe they lowered their expectations this time around.

It’s probably one of the nicest roadsters left in the world...still, crack pipe for me. Oh, and getting this registered in some states would be fun. Pretty sure Illinois could do it, but that’s because we’ll give a registration to anything...even if it’ll fail the emissions test 12 months later. I also wonder why they haven’t driven it at all in two years? Maybe it can’t pass NY’s emissions testing?

At least a crossblade could be registered as a fortwo since it’s literally just a fortwo without a roof.

With all that said...does anyone have around $20k I can “ borrow ” ?

ETA: Searching the car’s VIN reveals that maybe the New York man was fleeced by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and is trying to make back the money lost. Also, the car’s driven only 200 miles since making it to NY and those wheels aren’t black from the factory, current owner just put plasti-dip on them.

Kinja'd!!!

Is this car going to end up as one of those common cheap cars that eventually sells for million one day just because nobody drove it and instead traded it around like a pokemon card?

Bar the trip computer and hatch body that’s about the same spec as mine.

Oh, and the hard top. Interestingly a good top with bag is worth €1,000 on its own, or as much as a high mileage Roadster not thus equipped.

The price is, er, ambitious!

You’ll need at the very least 98 octane (RON) fuel to get that power output.

Yeah, I certainly don’t need to spend $30k on an illegally imported car. This thing could be seized and crushed at any point if the feds took notice. NY DMV is normally reasonably on top of things, so I wouldn’t be shocked if there was some fraud in getting it titled/registered as well.

And I’d be concerned about tuning a roady engine. Didn’t they sometimes have problems with their turbos eventually ingesting oil?

According to the ad I found from the previous Floridian owner, the car has a California title. The VIN does actually trace to the smart roadster (a trick not unheard of is to take the VIN from a wrecked fortwo) so I’m curious about what magic happened to get a title from Cali.

You can start legally importing these in less than ten years anyway, so is $20+k really worth it on a car that is really only worth maybe 5k max?

Hmm, I would have actually assumed a Florida title. FL seems to be the go to for cars registering cars that aren’t actually allowed to be imported.
